The heritage of Tyrrell is inextricably linked to the history of wine in Australia, it's the story of pioneers, men and women who transformed the Hunter Valley, planted grapes and looked for better ways to make wine. Lost Block was named after the 1993 vintage when it was mistakenly allowed to ripen for a longer period than usual, you could say that Tyrrell lost the plot, the quality of wine made from the harvest however was amazing. A seamlessly balanced wine of soft Semillon fruit characters before a clean, crisp finish.

Ever since a mythological deluge in 1993, the Tyrrell winemaking team has embarked on an argosy to detect and apprehend the illusory Lost Block. Stylistically fashioned to remain true to the promise of fruit laden, easy to drink wines, Chardonnay from the Hunter Valley and McLaren Vale have been harvested, crushed and chilled, before a hasty transfer to the Tyrrell wineworks at Pokolbin, for vinification into a fresh and crisp, revitalising wine.

Hunter Valley Distillery is a continuation of the same dry creek bed as the Short Flat Vineyard that produces Vat 1 Semillon. HVD is a proven Semillon vineyard, which consistently yields parcels of fruit that reach the very high standards that are demanded for inclusion in the exalted Vat 1. In 1995, the winemakers decided to keep the HVD Semillon by itself as a separate reserve wine and it went on to become one of the most talked about releases of the last decade. HVD Semillon is rapidly gaining a solid repute as one of Australia's great white wines.

Fashioned to capture the excellence and refinement of the classic Hunter Valley Shiraz style, named after Brokenback Mountain Range with which Hunter Valley shares a terroir of auspicious deep red volcanic soils. Tyrrell's source fruit from superior, dry grown, low yielding vineyards which have consistently produced the finest vintages. Hunter Valley makes a Shiraz as distinctive and unique as the renowned appellations of the old world, structured and aromatic, endowed with enticing fruit and lined with elegant tannins.

Belford Vineyard paradoxically produces the bigger yet softer of all Tyrrell's premium Semillon wines. Belford is the Hunter Valley archetype, showing a tightly structured palate with considerable length and breadth of citrus honey flavours. Unequivocally a sublime drink with a fully engaging nose and palate, already displaying toasty bottle aged complexity. Since 1982, Belford has claimed an extraordinary list of significant wine show trophies and copious gold medals.

Tulloch decided to add a Moscato to their cellar door range. Unfortunately the weather gods had other ideas and Muscat grapes were off the agenda. Not to be deterred, Tulloch set about to make a style of wine in the same vein as Moscato from Verdelho. Verscato is Tulloch's slightly pink and slightly sparkling take on the more traditional Moscato style. Verscato is less than 8% alcohol, the perfect accompaniment for brunch, and positively lovely as an aperitif or dessert wine. Versatile and pretty, what more could you ask for?.

One of Hunter Valley's great winemaking estates, home to the nation's best known Verdelho. Originating from Portugal, traditionally used to make fortified wines such as Madeira, Verdelho has always enjoyed popularity in Australia, the Hunter Valley examples in particular are a class of their own. Tulloch sources the best grapes from good vineyards on the fertile river plains of Upper Hunter, to be assembled alongside smaller parcels from the Tulloch property at Pokolbin. A course of barrel ferments and oak treatments add a measure of richness and complexity.

Forty percent less carbs and joules? Yes it's true! Two Thirds is a low alcohol, low carb dry wine, assembled from the two most popular and complimentery of all white grape varietals, Semillon with Sauvignon Blanc. Suitably mated for their mutual compatability, highly prized for their luscious fruit characters, enjoyed everywhere as the most appealing contemporary style of crisp and dry, exuberantly refreshing white wine.

The Famiglia range of wines is all about fine tuning the classic Italians into a contemporary Australian styling. Trentham have retained their identity as a unique, artisanal winemaking estate, amongst the boundless expanse of commercial Riverina vineyards. The Murphys were among the first settlers to establish vineyards around Mildura. The family moved to Trentham Cliffs in 1960 and re-developed a site which was part of a larger sheep station, irrigated by the nearby Murray River. The first vintages were destined for fortified wines, as was the market demand of the time. Blocks were later planted to Pinot Gris, which performed brilliantly in the rich red loam over limestone soils. A crisp and fresh table wine, just lovely alongside garlic recipes or everyone's favourite chicken caesar.

The Tolpuddle Martyrs were English farmhands whose only crime was to establish a workers union in the world's newest nation, perfect stock with strong backs to labour as penal colonists, they served out their sentence on the site of Tolpuddle Vineyard. The property is now planted to blocks of fully mature vines, they face northeast and slope gently up from Back Tea Tree Road. Soils are light silica over sandstone, only moderate in vigor, the ideal terroir for minimalist yields of the most remarkably balanced and wonderfully intense Pinot Noir.

By those wonderful folks who bring us Shaw & Smith, Tolpuddle was planted to vine in 1988, on a highly precious site along Back Tea Tree Road, just outside Hobart. The inaugural vintage claimed Tasmanian Vineyard of Year in 2006, Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith acquired the property in 2011, with a view to elevating the excruciatingly limited release Tolpuddle wines to the status of a national Grand Cru. A singular experience in new world Pinot Noir, Tolpuddle unravels endless layers of pastoral complexity, powerfully structured yet elegant, immaculate and poised.

A bolder style of sparkling Rose, offering some serious complexity and varietal trademarks, bound together by a a semi-dry, and finely beaded creamy mouthfeel. Tigress are fresh and crisp, early drinking wines that aim to present the unique regionality of Tasmania. Tempus Two imparts a level of style and sophistication into everyday sparkling wine enjoyment. An exclusively estate grown Riesling wine, from the superlative Kayena Vineyard on the banks of West Tamar and estate vineyards further afield along the apple isle's east coast. Exhibiting great purity of fruit character, an identifiably Tasmanian regionality and refreshing acidity that's a hallmark of the finest cool climate wines. Kayena Vineyard is drinking beautifully alongside prawns, scallops and whiting, a wonderful Tasmainan Riesling which would pair very well alongside traditional French inspired seafood recipes.

Kayena Vineyard makes a big, generous style of Pinot Noir, unique for it's power and weight to match game recipes as strong as heavily sauced garlic and rosemary lamb. The weight and flavour intensity of this elite vineyard Pinot Gris make it suitable to serve with quite richly flavoured dishes, including veal, turkey or pork.

The topical Medoc cépage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, artisanaly fashioned into a statuesque Bordeaux style. The exemplary efforts of Domaine A are Langtons listed, have received great adulation from the industry press and claimed prestigious wine show competition awards. Cabernet of the highest order, her tannins are fine but firm, striking the balance between power and grace, before an immeasurably long finish. Stoney Vineyard exhibits an elegance rarely found amongst her mainland siblings.

Stoney Rise is a boutique vineyard and cellar door in Tamar Valley. Planted to three hectares of Pinot Noir and one of Chardonnay, Stoney Rise was established in 1986, with a view to formulating distinctive small batch wines which express the influence of a unique mesoclime and terroir. Deep ruby colour, the nose opens with lifted aromas of violet, cherry and spice. The palate is full and rich, structured and taut, expressing bright berry characters on a solid fruit structure leading to a long finish with plenty weight of flavour. Great with grilled salmon or marinated beef tartare.

Stoney Rise is all about drinkability, the creation of complex, fully approachable food friendly wines, without any excessive oak or uber ripeness. Pinot Noir goes into the oldest barrels available to soften the tannins and refine textures without overpowering the sensual fruit characters. Stoney Rise is planted to a meagre three hectares of Pinot Noir in Tasmania's Tamar Valley, a bucolic idyll, yielding trophy winning wines and attracting the high critical acclaim since inaugural release. All by virtue of a passion for growing grapes and a penchant for Pinot Noir in the European tradition.

There are a few parcels of Shiraz on the Lubiana property which lend themselves very nicely, to the finely boned styles of Cotes du Rhone. Selection of fruit is the genesis, the manner of vinification plays an essential role. The timing of macerations are cardinal to the extraction of fruit, building velvet texture and infusing fine tannin, ferments for the most part, must be carried out without moving or disturbing the wine as it evolves. A judicious term in fine French oak has trimmed and shaped the palate to perfection, Stefano recommends smoked meats, suckling pig sausages or quail in pancetta and polenta.
